ISO Ratings

The Arizona Fire & Medical Authority (AFMA) is proud to provide highly rated fire protection across its member districts, including areas that have achieved an ISO Class 1 Public Protection Classification (PPC®)—the highest rating available.

ISO evaluates the fire protection capabilities of communities across the country and assigns classifications ranging from Class 1 to Class 10, with Class 1 representing superior fire protection. The evaluation considers key components of a community's fire protection system, including emergency communications, fire department operations, water supply, and community risk reduction.

AFMA's ISO Ratings

North County Fire & Medical District — Class 1
North County became the first fire district in Arizona to achieve a Class 1 rating in October 2014.

South County Fire & Medical District
Sun Lakes — Class 1
Tonopah — Class 4Y

The Sun Lakes area achieved its Class 1 rating in January 2019.

Buckeye Valley Fire District — Class 3

What Does an ISO Rating Mean for Our Communities?

ISO's Public Protection Classification provides an independent assessment of a community's structural fire protection capabilities. Achieving and maintaining strong ISO ratings reflects AFMA's investment in trained personnel, emergency response, apparatus and equipment, communications, water supply, fire prevention, and community risk reduction.

ISO classifications are also used by many property insurance companies as one factor when evaluating fire risk and determining insurance premiums.

For AFMA, these ratings represent more than a classification. They reflect our ongoing commitment to reducing community risk, continually improving our capabilities, and providing effective fire and emergency services to the communities we serve.
